Redshank (Tringa totanus)

Updated: Sep 9, 2023

Redshank in Lerwick

This is another bird from the Rye Harbour Nature Sanctuary that was a lifer for me. It was also unidentifiable, but 2 people agreed on UK bird ID group that this was a redshank, so I thought that was good corroboration. I imagine it's the legs that give it away as they do have reddish orange legs that kind of remind me of the red carrots you get in India. My photo was accidental. All I saw were all kinds of brown birds flying around and not knowing what they were, and I just kept trying to take photos, not even knowing if I captured anything since my camera can't really take good action shots or birds in flight. So again, this is all I have as a record of having seen the redshank, so I post it here, but please know that I am under no illusion that this is a quality photo! You'll see black-headed gulls and a couple of avocets on the ground here, and then in the lower right-hand side, you'll see a brown blur with orange feet in flight. That's the redshank!

Update August 5, 2023: I was able to get a much better photo of this bird in Lerwick. I've changed my top photo for that reason so that the thumbnail of the post looks better.
