Great skua (Stercorarius skua)

Writer's picture: J GillJ Gill

Another seabird I got to see while in Shetland was the great skua. I got my first photo of one at Sumburgh head, but we saw several on our boat tour, and I was able to get a few more decent shots of them. These are huge birds, and they fly really fast - faster than our boat was going! Like many large birds, they are majestic, and I could just watch them all day. One thing we learned was that Shetlanders call these birds "bonxies." Scotland has a lot of fun words that aren't used elsewhere in the country.
