Eurasian collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto)

Writer's picture: J GillJ Gill

As much as I've been excited to find more birds in London that I realised would be here, it's always exciting to travel somewhere else in the country, not just for the joy of travelling, but also to be exposed to birds that live there that don't tend to be found in London. One of these was the Eurasian collared dove. I've actually seen these back home. They are an introduced species in Canada, but they haven't really been considered invasive because they aren't really taking away from other birds, despite the fact that their populations are growing and also migrating farther north. This one was spotted in Fowey in Cornwall. I saw one two days in a row, perhaps the same one, on a wire from out the window of the guest house where we were staying.
