Common tern (Sterna hirundo)

Writer's picture: J GillJ Gill

The other tern I saw in Lerwick was the common tern. This tern is much larger than the Arctic tern. I also wish there was a way for me to have got a photo of them both to compare the sizes side-by-side, but I mainly could tell when I saw them flying by because the Artic terns are just so petite. My comments about terns is pretty much the same as my Arctic tern post, so I'll just leave a photo here for your enjoyment! The one thing I did want to say is that I feel lucky to have seen some of these resting. My biggest problem when I see terns is that I mainly see them in flight, so I'm often unable to get any sort of decent photo of them. They were being really cooperative with me that day!
