This is yet another bird that I thought for sure was the same as the red-headed duck we have at home, but nope! I'm foiled again. I really need to let go of this habit! haha! But as with others, the common pochard is definitely very similar to the red-headed duck. The main difference that I can see is the beak colour. Red-headed ducks--at least the males--have fully blue beaks, whereas the common pochard appears to have a black and blue beak. And no, while tempting, I've decided to make no jokes about the duck having got himself into a fight ;)
In any case, both ducks are as pretty as each other. I love the colour of the red and how it contrasts with their black and white bodies. I find them very striking, especially when you see their heads shine like copper pennies in the sun. What's challenging in the sun, though, is not overexposing the white part. I'm not a professional photographer, but hopefully I'll luck out with some better lighting for better photos of these one day. For now, you'll see the female in the second photo.
