Carrion crow (Corvus corone)

Writer: J GillJ Gill

I mentioned how big the crows are here in London. My mom would always say that our crows where we live are huge--and it's true. People often mistake them for ravens because they're so large, but the ravens are even larger! In any case, here, they have these crows called carrion crows. They are about as large as their American cousins, but to me, they look pretty much the same. This is a case where the scientific name trumps all: they each have their own classification, so they are not the same species, but I do wonder what the main differences are because there must be at least one that distinguishes them. I find it fascinating. In an upcoming post, you'll see a magpie with the same issue--I can't see how they look different from the ones at home. The construction site near my flat seems to attract a lot of these crows. They are always able to find something to eat, and I think they also try to steal what the gulls get as well. But there are these large steel tubes propping up the platforms that the construction crews are using in the Thames, and for whatever reason, they are filled with water, so I have seen some crows enjoying their bird baths in them as well.
