Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola)

Writer: J GillJ Gill

This is a bird I've seen at home, albeit only a female one, in real life. It turns out that the bufflehead is native to Canada but not to the UK, although the British Waterfowl Association says that some vagrants will find their way to the UK at times. They're pretty cool looking birds and significantly smaller than you would imagine. I've never seen one walking around, but if one were on land, it would be smaller than a crow, for sure. As a result, they are very cute. They also have a really funny mating dance where the males bend their heads all the way back. It looks hilarious, to me, but obviously that's what the female buffleheads want to see.
