Black guillemot (Cepphus grylle)

Writer's picture: J GillJ Gill

When we visited Skomer Island last year to see the puffins, if you're a long-time reader of my blog, you might recall my mentioning about some of the other birds we saw and learned about that breed there. The guillemot was one of them. What I didn't know is that there is also a black guillemot (among other types of them)! I saw several of these in the ocean as our ferry was travelling to Shetland, and I also saw some around the island as well and discovered what they are. As with all the birds in the auk family, these are some sleek, cool, dapper birds.
