Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea)

Writer's picture: J GillJ Gill

Along the Brei Wick bay in Lerwick, the capital of the main island, there were lots of fun birds to spot there. One of them was the Arctic tern. Terns are already stealthy, speedy creatures, but the Arctic tern is smaller than some of the other terns, and seems speedier and stealthier for this reason. I caught this little baby waiting for mama or papa to bring it a snack. Here you can make out a sand eel in the parent's beak. I really love to watch terns; they speed around over the water and then all of a sudden, they'll stop mid-flight and dive vertically down, beak first, to nab something out of the water and spring right back up with its catch. Their dive-bombing capabilities are striking! I'd like to say that I have a good photo of that, but I'm not good with action shots. I'm not sure that my camera can do that.
